PITTSBURGH – Goals by
Rebecca Pihlgren and
Sterre Kuijper gave Point Park a 2-1 MEC win over Concord University on Wednesday afternoon at Highmark Stadium in Pittsburgh.
Rebecca Pihlgren scored her eighth goal of the season to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead in the 11
th minute. Pihlgren is now tied for the most goals in the Mountain East Conference.
Concord equalized the game in the 37
th minute as Taryn Kelly scored her second goal of the season off an assist from Caitlin Webster to make it 1-1 going into halftime.
In the 56
th minute,
Sterre Kuijper (6) scored the eventual game winner off a double assist from
Austyn Burkett and Pihlgren to give the Pioneers a 2-1 lead.
The Point Park defense was able to keep the Mountain Lions off the board the remainder of the second half to earn their fifth Mountain East Conference win of the season.
Statistically, Concord outshot Point Park 13-6 and held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks. Eight of Concord's shots came on goal while the Pioneers had three on goal.
In her first start of the season, keeper
Maggie Pappas recorded seven saves in goal while allowing only one goal.
The Pioneers now sit at 6-4-2 overall and 5-3-1 in league play while Concord falls to 6-4-2 overall and 5-2-2 in the Mountain East. Point Park heads back on the road on Sunday to face off with Charleston. Kick-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at the Welch Athletic Complex.
