PORTSMOUTH, Ohio -- Point Park University volleyball won one of two matches Saturday at the Shawnee State Fall Classic with a 3-0 win over Montreat (N.C.) and a 3-1 loss to (RV) Union (Ky.).
Point Park (8-6) avenged an earlier loss to Montreat (4-4) with a 25-17, 25-18, 25-12 victory to start the day. The Pioneers had lost to the Cavaliers in the season opener back on Aug. 23. But Point Park put up a season-best hitting percentage of .317 in the rematch to take care of things quickly.
The kills were spread around in that match with Ashley Taylor having a team-high 11 followed by Savannah Dishman (9), Jazlyn Rozier (8), Meg Reineke (7) and Erica Gumz (6). The middle attack was very effective with Dishman and Rozier combining to hit .789.
Defensively, Rozier collected six blocks while Taylor and setter Julia Menosky had three each. Taylor paced the Pioneers with 12 digs. Menosky totaled 37 assists.
Versus (RV) Union (10-4), Point Park dropped the first two sets and could not come out of that hole. The Bulldogs won, 25-21, 25-17, 22-25, 25-21. The match was very even in many of the statistical categories although one area with an advantage for Union was kills, 58-47.
Union had four different players with double-digit kills as Maggie McGraw and Jenna Nelson had 12 each, Elle Barnet had 11 and Rachel Andrews 10. Point Park had Reineke with 11 and Gumz with 10. Dishman totaled nine kills and four aces.
Menosky led Point Park with 14 digs, and Taylor and Reineke had 10 each. Menosky added 32 assists.
Point Park's next matches are Wednesday at Washington & Jefferson and then the start of River States Conference play next weekend Sept. 15-16 at IU East and IU Kokomo.
