PORTSMOUTH, Ohio -- Point Park University volleyball needed only six sets to win its two matches Friday at the Shawnee State (Ohio) Fall Classic. The Pioneers swept their way to 3-0 wins over Indiana Tech and host Shawnee State.
Point Park (7-5) had a balanced effort in the opening win over Indiana Tech (5-6), which came by scores of 25-17, 25-18, 25-21. The Pioneers had 34 kills come from eight different players with Erica Gumz and Meg Reineke leading the way with nine and eight, respectively.
The Pioneers racked up the points in a variety of ways with eight aces and eight total blocks as a team. Point Park's defense forced Indiana Tech into 25 hitting errors and an attack percentage of .105. Julia Menosky and Ashley Taylor tied for team-high honors with nine digs each. Savannah Dishman had points come with six kills, three aces and two block solos.
The victory over Shawnee State (4-6) had scores of 25-18, 25-17, 28-26 with the Pioneers going extra points to finish off the third. The attacking was on fire for Point Park with Taylor (15 kills), Reineke (14) and Gumz (12) combining for over 40 kills themselves. Gumz posted a .370 percentage while Reineke hit .323. Taylor collected 12 digs.
Point Park led the kill category, 50-34, over Shawnee State. Setter Menosky racked up 45 assists and eight digs. Dangelo led the back row with 17 digs and two aces. The Pioneers had another eight aces in all. It was the second time that Point Park beat SSU this year, both by 3-0.
Point Park plays two more matches Saturday to finish up at the SSU Fall Classic. The Pioneers have rematches versus two more teams they have already played this year. They face Montreat (N.C.) (4-2) at 10 a.m. looking to make up for a 3-1 loss at the Cavaliers in the season opener Aug. 23. Point Park then plays (RV) Union (Ky.) (8-4) at 12 p.m., which the Pioneers beat, 3-2, on Aug. 26.
