SILVIS, Ill. -- Point Park University's stay in the NAIA Men's Golf National Championship has ended after 36 holes. The Pioneers shot a team score of 335 in the second round Wednesday to improve upon their score from the first round but remained in 29th place after the completion on Wednesday's play.
The Pioneers had an early tee time on Wednesday, but weather played havoc on the second-round action throughout the day. Not only was there a long delay in the middle of the round, weather eventually ended play later in the day. Many teams were unable to complete the second round and instead they will resume round No. 2 Thursday at 7:30 a.m. CT.
With the weather that came Wednesday and with more expected bad weather arriving over the next two days, the NAIA informed coaches late Wednesday night that the tournament field would be cut after 36 holes instead of the regularly scheduled 54 holes. When the second round is completed Thursday morning, the field will be cut to the top 17 teams and top 40 players and ties.
With Point Park already outside that line and through 36 holes, the Pioneers will not have another 18 holes to play for the third round. Point Park was waiting to hear its tee time for the third round but instead got word of the cut being moved up.
Point Park had its challenges at TPC Deere Run, the site of the PGA Tour's John Deere Classic and the site of this year's NAIA championship. The pro course was made harder with a constant wind and the rain arriving in the second round. Jared Bender led the Pioneers in round No. 2 with an 80, and next were Max Kaminsky (83) and Steven Bender (84). Jared Bender shot 40 on each side of his card, and Steven Bender had two birdies on his front 9 to make the turn at 1-over par.
The Pioneers were competing in the NAIA men's golf national tournament for the fourth time in five years. Point Park qualified as the River States Conference Tournament champions. The starting lineup at NAIAs featured two juniors and three sophomores, all of whom will be back next year.
