CHILLICOTHE, Ohio -- No. 3 University of Rio Grande passed its elimination test Sunday versus No. 1 Point Park University at the River States Conference Baseball Tournament thanks to a shutout by Trent Downs. The RedStorm beat Point Park, 5-0, as Downs gave up just five hits over 9.0 innings. Rio Grande stayed alive in the tournament being played at VA Memorial Stadium, and Point Park joined the RedStorm in the elimination part of the bracket.

Downs kept Point Park off balance with a variety of pitches, most of which went for strikes. Downs threw 108 pitches in the complete game, 77 of which were in the zone. He struck out five, walked one and had an errorless defense behind him.

The Rio Grande defense flashed the leather on several occassions to take away potential hits from Point Park, and it turned two double plays when the Pioneers had something going in the fifth and eighth innings.

The RedStorm struck early for three runs in the top of the first, and Downs took it from there. Rio Grande had three hits in that first inning. Leadoff man Luis Jimenez led off by reaching on an error, Daryin Lewis followed with a base hit, and Carlos Flores drove them both in with a triple. Kameron Herring added an RBI hit two batters later for the 3-0 lead.

Point Park starter Nicholas Beardsley pitched into the seventh inning, and he settled in after giving up the early runs. Rio Grande did get a run on three hits in the third, the last of which was Herring's run-scoring knock. But that was all the RedStorm got off the Pioneers' starter.

Downs got stronger as the game went on retiring Point Park in order three of the last four innings. He allowed only one base runner during that time, and it was erased via the double play in the eighth.

Flores and Herring had two hits apiece for Rio Grande, and Addison Domingo had two hits for Point Park. For the complete box score, click above.
